What is port egmont?

Port Egmont is a natural harbour on the northeastern coast of Saunders Island in the Falkland Islands. It was discovered by British explorer John Byron in 1765 and was initially claimed by Spain. However, it was later established as a British settlement in 1765 by Commodore John Byron during his circumnavigation of the world.

Port Egmont was an important British outpost during the Falklands Crisis in 1770 when Spain attempted to take control of the islands. The settlement was eventually dismantled in 1774 as part of the agreement to resolve the crisis, and the British government withdrew all settlers from the islands.

Today, Port Egmont is a popular destination for tourists visiting the Falkland Islands for its historical significance and natural beauty. Visitors can explore the remains of the settlement, including the old storehouse and water cisterns, as well as enjoy the scenic views and wildlife in the surrounding area.
